“Now that all the work is done, and the dedication has been held, I want to take this moment to express my thanks as well as my joy for what has been created.”
“I always had a strong sense that we were a team,
and that our vision was as important as yours.”
The Rev. William E. Scriviner / Director of Pastoral Care
Childrens Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati OH
The Chapel Of The Holy Child combines historic and contemporary elements, as well as an interfaith area and a Christian chapel that can be used separately or combined. Schickel Design Company worked in collaboration with GBBN Architects also of Cincinnati. Stained Glass, paintings, a flowing water baptistery and beautifully designed and crafted furnishings create a space of beauty and reverence.

Cincinnati's award-winning Children's Hospital Medical Center serves the whole child. In addition to providing outstanding family-centered medical care, CHMC takes seriously the connection between physical and spiritual wellness. In 2002 Chaplain William Scrivener, Senior Director of Pastoral Care at Children's and Matthew Schottlekotte from Cincinnati's GBBN Architects collaborated with the firm of Schickel Design, well known for its outstanding work in creating transcendent Sacred Space and with a particular strength in creating multi-faith chapels. The result was Chapel of the Holy Child, a beautiful space with an underlying sense of unity, peace and harmony, where patients, staff and their families can go in times of sorrow or joy to rest, pray and recharge and where groups of any faith can gather to worship together.
Chapel of the Holy Child bridges the history of Cincinnati Children's by incorporating a number of beautiful pieces from the original chapel built in 1925. It bridges the history of Schickel Design Company because it features some of the last pieces created by William Schickel the founder of Schickel Design in five large German mouth-blown stained glass windows depicting the elements of creation from the point of view of the child as well as major works by his successor in the firm Martha Schickel Dorff. When completed, the project was honored with an AIA design award.
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is a not-for-profit hospital and research center pioneering breakthrough treatments, and training healthcare professionals for the future. It is among the most highly rated pediatric care facilities in the country.
