FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Schickel Design studio is entering a new era with Martha Schickel Dorff combining the richness of tradition with innovative new work to create art and furnishings for the new Chapel and Interfaith Sanctuary for Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) in Cincinnati

The studio, founded by her father, William Schickel, in 1948, is known for the beauty and quality of its work. “God speaks to us through form and image, light, color and shape,” Dorff said. “As artists, it is our fondest hope that our work can serve to reflect the transcendent truths of faith.”

Chapel of the Holy Child at CHMC draws on this tradition and the guidance of head chaplain William Scriviner, an Episcopal priest. “Our mission is to give a physical presence to the vision of the hospital,” Dorff said.

The firm, still based in Loveland, Ohio is collaborating with GBBN Architects and Messer Construction Co. in creation of the chapel.

Dorff’s abstract paintings will provide a rich expression of the relationship between suffering and resurrection. The baptismal font will have a large, elegant, spun copper bowl on an oak base, with flowing water to welcome new life. William Schickel designed the stained glass that will introduce natural elements of earth, air, fire and water as experienced by a child.

The subdued, yet colorful chapel spaces – with both new works and familiar furnishings from the hospital’s 1926 sanctuary – will accommodate the needs of one person, a family or larger groups.

The chapel is designed to simultaneously welcome Christian and non-Christian visitors; part of the space is free of all religious symbols, while furnishings in the main worship area are distinctly, if ecumenically, Christian. Chapel of the Holy Child is to be completed in August, 2002.

Schickel Design Co. also has current major projects in the Louisville and Columbus metro areas. Its work embraces design of worship and communal spaces for a broad range of institutions as well as Historic adaptive re-use.

University of Notre Dame press recently published an illustrated history of the studio, “Sacred Passion: The Art of William Schickel.” He remains active in the studio, concentrating on painting, stained glass and related visual arts.
