NEW USE FOR AN ENDANGERED HISTORIC BUILDING— Working with owner Jim Smythe whose courage and vision saw opportunity where others saw only a decaying building, Schickel Design Company, led by Martha Schickel Dorff AIA, has created an exciting new design for the Columbus headquarters of Habitec Security in the historic stone Stratford Methodist Episcopal Church on the corner of routes 23 and 315 in historic Delaware just north of Columbus. The design honors the integrity and beauty of the original stone building. The church was built in 1840 for the Stratford Mill Community on Alum Creek in Delaware County north of Columbus. The original building is limestone/fieldstone, front gabled with overhanging eaves. Hand hewn wood trusses support the standing seam metal roof. It is a significant historic building and is listed on the national register of historic places. The location of Habitec here creates a viable new use for a piece of our history, which had been in danger of extinction. The new design restores the original front entrance and creates a lovely entry plaza bounded by a low screen wall, between the building and the road. Once inside, an office “island” is created in the center, leaving the volume of the space and the beautiful stone walls intact. The historic cupola will be redone and opened to below allowing light to flood the entry and the hand hewn wood trusses above. The arched windows will be restored and mouth blown German stained glass, also by Schickel Design will fill the lower panels. Schickel Design Company is a full service Architecture/Design firm.
